Kilkis prefecture lies in northern Greece. It has an area of 2,519 square kilometres and a population of 89.056 inhabitants (2001). It borders to the north with FYROM, to the east with Serres prefecture, to the south with Thessaloniki prefecture and to the western with Pella prefecture. From the Krousia Mountains comes the French River (or Echedoros) that draw to the Thermaic gulf. In the northern prefecture border is Doirani Lake which is separated from border to border and about 60% owned by FYROM. In the southern prefecture part is Pikrolimni, known for its medicinal properties. Kilkis town is 48 kilometres from Thessaloniki, while the corresponding distances from the International Airport «Macedonia» and the border with FYROM are 66 and 25 kilometres respectively (distances linked by highways and motorways expressways). Educational Level: The situation of the region educational level is not far from the rest Greek province. It seems that there is a good nucleus of people. These people have the necessary education to support the development prefecture efforts. Due to the close distance between the prefecture and Thessaloniki, the education level doubles with the influx of skilled labour from the broader geographical and academic area in Central Macedonia (Aristotle University, University of Macedonia, International University, Thessaloniki Technological Institute). Primary Sector The agricultural land amounting to 1.063.500 hectares is divided into 117.919 parcels with an average area of 9 acres each. About 40% of land is cultivated by their owners while 55% is hired from other people. The remaining 5% cultivated with another occupation regime (concession etc.). The dominant crops in Kilkis prefecture are plow-cultivation. The 84% of those covered by cereals, 10% from forage plants (barley, corn) and 6% by industrial crops (cotton, tobacco, sugar beet). The vegetables, the tree-crops and the vineyards, hold only 3.2% of farmland. The vegetables under glass (greenhouse) are minimal while industrial tomatoes grown in small size (0.8%). From fruit trees there are few cherry and peach trees (0.5%). Also small size (0.8%) cover for dried fruit trees - especially almonds and hazelnuts. Vineyards are in the region of Goumenissa and despite the small area they cover, (3000 acres) producing the famous local wine (2001 figures). There is also a gradual increase production of industrial plants (tobacco, industrial tomatoes) and particularly of cotton despite the small percentage of irrigated land. The prefecture ranked third in Greece breeding large animals together with the Larissa prefecture. Thessaloniki and Serres prefectures proceeded, having, as well as Larissa prefecture, much larger land area than Kilkis prefecture. Finally, the pure farms number is small (5% of total holding sin the primary sector). Secondary Sector This sector now generates 50% of GDP in the prefecture. The manufacturing activity is concentrated in the Stavrochoriou part and in the southern prefecture border, on the road to Thessaloniki (N. Santa) and in the Polykastro and Axioupolis area, also in National Highway surroundings. These companies operate with reference both Thessaloniki city and Balkans, and significantly affect the prefecture character where they play an important point of economic and social structure. The main industries involved in Kilkis prefecture are textiles, electrical, engineering and construction, aluminium profiles, plastics, food, beverages and furniture. There are also high-tech units such as metrology and calibration. Many of the industries located in the prefecture, are among the most dynamic sector in Greece and in the Balkans. Stavrochori Industrial Religion is characterized as the best organized and dynamic Industrial Religion in Greece with excellent infrastructure. 42 industries are located in there, employing more than 2.000 workers, while in its expansion has expressed interesting installation or relocation, start-up and existing major industries. In addition, from July 2007 the Stavrochori Industrial Religion is associated with the country grid gas. This fact leads the established firms to acquire energy flexibility. Finally, in 2007 were made upgrading projects that cost about 1.3 million Euros and was also constructed a modern fire station. - ILIODOMI SA - Applications photovoltaic modules Other areas where industrial activity exist is Axioupoli and Polikastro where at the present there are few established industries while exist a growing interest for additional installations. In this time, is designing to create some business parks in the above regions, as well as in the N. Santa from the moment it is installed there now 40 industries. Informal gathering industries are observed in the Old and New Agioneri, on the outskirts of Kilkis and in Pedino, French, Mandron and Kambani regions. The map below reflects geographically the industrial activity in Kilkis prefecture. The coloured pink area is Kilkis prefecture capital, while the yellow area reflects the industrial activity in Stavrochori Industrial Religion. In the south, the industrial activity in N. Santa is reflected in grey colour and to a lesser extent; the orange shows the activity in the region of Agioneri. Finally, western of the prefecture reflected the industrial / craft activities in the areas Polykastro and Axioupoli with purple and light grey colour, respectively.  Tertiary Sector The main commercial centres in the prefecture are Kilkis town, Goumenissa, Polikastro and Axioupoli. The nature of urban centres is central because they gather together the largest activity percentage and attract a significant number of residents from surrounding areas. The proximity to Thessaloniki prefecture and the easy access to the vast consumer market is a comparative advantage. It should be noted that, in recent years, the visitors crossing the Balkan from National Highway Thessaloniki is exploited. The tourism in prefecture, as it appears today, is not proportionate to the space interest, and has varied in size. An important part of visitors belong to the Religious Tourism category, while today in the prefecture operate a limited number of hotels and subsidised program activities (Integrated Rural Development Programs and Leader) have developed rural tourism pockets in an important parts in the prefecture. The agro-tourism and the tourism is an important target for prefecture growth for the years 2007-2013. Gradually steps made in developing alternative forms of tourism with the enhancement of natural resources in the prefecture such as full of plants, mountains and water systems.
